God’s light show

lightning

You light up the sky:
thin streaks of pure electricity;
powerful and vast;
the prelude to nature’s rumbling thunder;
a reminder to all
of the power
of the One Who controls
these forces of nature
that can strike at any time,
humbling the arrogant disdain so often displayed by humans
who think they are masters of this universe.

The precious drops of water fall from the sky,
blotting the dead, brown earth below;
a welcome refreshment
from parched months of summer
in this prolonged drought
which has long wearied all within this dwelling place.

I sit in my darkened room,
the sun having sunk behind the mountain,
into the ocean,
yet the miniscule remnants of daylight remain,
offering a faint view
of the towering landmark which anchors our city.

Though danger lurks
in your blue and purple streaks,
none strike near me,
so I watch God’s light show in awe,
pondering – as I did in childhood –
how much we could gain
if we could just capture your essence.
Store it and feed it into the grid,
To benefit humanity
who rapidly eats away
at the Earth’s limited natural resources
To generate just small amounts
of the electricity you so freely throw down to us.

I wish this show would go on and on,
and though it might,
my viewing time is cut short:
I cannot linger anymore,
for the demands of life encroach
upon my serendipitous moments of wonder.

And I can only pray and hope
that the next time you come around
I’ll once more have the time,
space,
and purity of soul
to witness
the magnificence of God’s light show.

  1. I absolutely love how you caught this moment and put it into such beautiful words! Moments that we often overlook. Quite intriguing, I must say!
