A lot can happen in a year. And when we think about all the hours and days and weeks we spent in anguish, especially these past few months, was it worth it? Is it worth it?
We talk about freedom as a construct indicating our capacity to move around and make decisions. But what happens when that’s taken away from us and there’s no recourse or alternatives? No plan B. No contingency.
I recently entertained this idea of acceptance and surrender. Nothing
new that we haven’t learned in our respective religions for eons.
God is in control.
It sounds wonderful out loud, but it’s difficult to internalise and
absorb emotionally.
But what if, at this very moment, I chose to surrender it all to Him? (As we were taught we rightfully should.) Well, wouldn’t I then be free? Or at the very least, have less to worry about?
It’s somewhat unnatural to divorce ourselves completely from everything happening in our lives. Also, “Trusting” and “Surrendering” does not mean passivity.
But…the ever lingering “but”…I just feel, increasingly, that these mountains were not made for us to carry on our own.

This piece is from Corona Times: Words from the Pandemic – a free e-book of pandemic-inspired writing which will hopefully become an important artefact of this period, giving future readers insights into how COVID affected those of us who lived through it, beyond the mere statistics and news stories which will be preserved in popular media.
