The Quiet Moments

In the quiet moments,
before others arise,
take advantage of the silence:
an intimacy untouched by external word or deed,
precious moments of peace
before the wheels of everyday life
churn back into action.

Read, if you will.
Or reflect on moments of achievement or pain.

Or simply sit –
free of both movement and thought –
simply being,
as you soak in the stillness of a life untroubled.

Soon, your time will end,
as the others emerge from slumber,
new energies entering your field of existence,
personal time and space shrinking,
solitude crowded out,
as the daily grind returns.

And once that phone or computer is on,
consciousness is flooded,
mind quickly occupied
by the inevitable flow
of messages, requests, news and more,
signalling plans for the day,
responsibilities that were temporarily forgotten,
and challenges to return to.

So, carve out these moments,
bask in their warm glow,
immerse yourself in the hush of life unhurried,
then stand up,
take a deep breath,
and go forth – with refreshed inner strength – to meet the day.

As we approach what promises to be much needed downtime at the end of a long year, let’s remember to feed not only our bodies, but also our souls.

The early morning is a time of special blessings, best spent in solitude – where we can enjoy a stillness that doesn’t exist at any other time of day (or night). It’s a time in which our hearts and minds are clearer – uncontaminated by the tasks of the day ahead, and the inevitable flood of input that awaits from both the online and offline worlds.

Try to sleep early enough so that you can take advantage of these precious moments the next morning, because before you know it, the new year will be here, and the pressures will build once more.

Happy holidays to you all. And thank you for your support over this last year.  💙

  1. A very nice summation of an underappreciated time of day, the quiet and early morning (though I do like mine with coffee :)) Hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday season.
