Winter symphony

It starts with the pitter-patter
of drops falling gently.
A light drizzle
refreshing the chilled air
which freezes fingers both indoors and out.

Nascent streams trickle down gutters,
burbling into drains –
a soothing white noise held constant
by the endless fall –
Winter’s bounty
back after parched Summer months.

Before long,
the drops get bigger,
velocity rising,
as the sound of static
envelops the aural landscape.

Sheets of rain sweep past,
as gutters soon gush,
and impromptu rivers run down streets,
gulped down by stormwater sewers.

Urban lakes form
and dams fill,
while some complain
of the constant downpours
which inconvenience
traffic
washing
and their normal ways of life.

Destruction, too,
is wrought
as water penetrates
homes
shops
and offices,
human structures offering scant protection
from nature’s deluge
which shows no signs of slowing
as Winter bears on
day after day,
week after week.

But one day,
when the Earth has drunk her fill,
slivers of warmth will creep back,
as the Spring sun
pierces the clearing grey.

And the flowers will emerge,
as vegetation sprouts abundantly.
And the humans will
rejoice
repair
and restore
what was lost,
and move forward swiftly
as the seasons cycle on,
time passing and wisdom gained,
age advancing,
memories retained.

So
while there’s still time,
attune your heart and mind
to the symphonies all around,
before you meet silence underground.
