Future Memories

“You are nothing but a number of days, and whenever a day passes away, a part of you passes away.”

― Hasan al-Basri

How many days have you lived?
How many more to go?
Does time slip away too fast?
Or does it crawl, ever slow?

In the haze of life –
time
punctuated by
joy and sorrow,
anger and regret,
ecstasy and agony,
and inspiration you can't forget –
you traverse
moment
after
moment
after
moment,
rarely realising
that
one day,
the moment just passed,
will be your last.

And when that time comes,
which of these moments -
the pearls on the impossibly long string called life –
will stand out
most?

Were they times of anguish?
Grief, pain, and heartbreak?

Or times of glee?
Radiant stars glowing;
light bouncing
off the vast canvas you painted
in the time you were given.

Hindsight is 20-20,
and from high above
it's easy to see
the gems that glitter
in the vastness of this sea.

But before your time expires,
what if you knew
how
to recognise
the highlights
as they happen?

What if
your heart
could be present enough
to see the magic –
these future memories
unfolding right in front of you
in real time?

What if you could slow time down?
And,
like a ghost,
leave your body –
soul floating above –
freeze the moment
as you record
every last detail
in your mind's eye:
the sights and sounds,
the energy that surrounds;
the smells, tastes, and touch,
the people you cherish so much.

These details –
so overwhelming –
forever captured
in your heart,
which expands
to meet the moment.
A memory to savour,
locked
deep within,
more precious
than anything
this world can offer.

A treasure to revisit
months
years
decades
from today.
A portal to the past,
an unforgettable replay.

How many moments have you captured?
How many more to come?
Will you catch your future memories
before they're gone?
