A midsummer night’s dream

Twin lights shimmer on the water below,
The harbour packed
with desolate vessels
of those who call this place their holiday home.

I stand on the ridge this eve,
ocean gently roaring below,
Nature’s ever-constant push and pull
bringing life to the night,
as the lighthouse spins with
twirling white hope:
Guidance for those lost at sea.
Comfort in knowing that
salvation is near.

Seagulls chirp in the near distance,
failing to adhere to the sunset curfew
of their winged brethren,
Still searching for scraps of sustenance
Callously discarded
by heedless human companions.

Orange lights speckle the horizon ahead,
Civilisation brimming
amidst this seaside paradise,
While laughter and jolly
filter through from the restaurant below,
vacationers enjoying the final days and nights
of a summer retreat.

For the new year beckons,
with all its work and stress,
Rushed lives amid ignored beautiful skies.

But nay!
For just these moments,
let’s pause time,
freeze it forever:
Perfection encapsulated
in this midsummer night’s dream…

  1. What a beautiful moment you’ve captured here, Yacoob. Thank you for this; its magic soothed my heart and gentled my breath.

    1. Thanks, Kitty. I’ve heard poetry described as the literary version of a photograph, and I’m happy to have captured this moment.
