An Ordinary Day Last October

Peace.
Peace.
It’s all around.

Blue skies and chirping birds
fluttering in and out of trees
as bees hop from flower to flower,
collecting the now-abundant pollen
that permeates this glorious Spring day.

She sits on the stones outside,
back yard paved just weeks ago,
happily lost in her make-believe world:

Tiny characters in a brightly-constructed toy house.
Imagination occupying her completely –
childhood bliss
in holiday happiness.

She narrates the action,
and speaks for her charges, too;
an empty ice cream tub the holder
for the many little pieces
which are no longer useful
in this now-concluded phase of the game.

In she comes –
lunch requested –
as time crunches again,
and this episode concludes.

  1. Oh, I love the depth of this, Yacoob! That perfect capture of childhood innocence, concentration, and imagination that captivates the hours and enlarges the child created world to All. And then, that easy transition to the Great Reduction of what’s “real” to adults. Lunch. Tasks. Conversation…till the child escapes again.

You’ve helped me see again why I need my long walks and and hours for writing!

Thank you and blessings on your little one and her big dreams.
